War Poetry
There is a similarity between the characters in The Things They Carried. Many of the soldiers are depressed; their situations are bleak. Many are dreaming of women at home, or simply of relaxing in the U.S.A. The lines of poetry would probably be appropriate for soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, because they are almost as disconnected from their original lives as the soldiers in Vietnam. The lines deal with coldness and loneliness of war, which is relevant to all wars.

Q: In hindsight, do you think it may have been wise to incorporate corporal punishment into the raising of Jack?
Dwight:
Q: Were you an absolute douche to your first wife, too?
Geoffrey:
Q: Do you think it is wrong that your father neglected Jack and your mother?
Duke:
Q: Did you forget about Jack while he and his mother were traveling around, or were you just being an ass?
Arthur:
Q: Are you gay?

Dear De Niro,
My name is Dwight. I'm your biggest fan! I'm the guy you performed as, and I think you did great! The way you taught Jack all those lessons in fighting, and how you really gave it to 'em when the little bastard ditched the car was perfect. No mercy to the little spawn of Satan. He was a vicious little sissy pervert, and your acting when straightening him out was just like it was.
Keep acting, De Niro. You are on a roll!
