There is a similarity between the characters in
The Things They Carried. Many of the soldiers are depressed; their situations are bleak. Many are dreaming of women at home, or simply of relaxing in the U.S.A. The lines of poetry would probably be appropriate for soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, because they are almost as disconnected from their original lives as the soldiers in Vietnam. The lines deal with coldness and loneliness of war, which is relevant to all wars.
